We have real evidence of the increasing worldwide consensus that a sustainable energy future powered by renewables is within reach. Adnan Z. Amin - Director General

About the Marketplace

The Sustainable Energy Marketplace is a virtual platform that gathers all renewable energy actors and IRENA’s expertise and work to pursue together the deployment of renewable energies in developing countries. The marketplace aims to scale up the existing global investment and support the channeling of public and private finance to meet the demand in the market. Project developers, financiers, service and technology suppliers can register and work together to realize projects and bring energy where it is still needed.
In order to support project development and financing IRENA will assess projects in more detail and cooperate closely with international financing institutions, donors, private sector advisors and service providers to actively facilitate the market. Market players can communicate with IRENA through the platform to indicate their specific needs and interests.

Benefits for Users

Project Owners

The market place provides the project owners with increased visibility for their projects among financiers and other market players. It also makes it easier to identify relevant financiers, advisors and service providers for specific needs in a timely manner, and helps to make more targeted and relevant contacts with them. Project owners will also benefit from IRENA's project assessments, done on a selective basis, identifying the specific needs and next steps for projects, and supporting projects to take the next steps. Through IRENA's other portals it provides project owners with tools and templates for project development, resource and zoning maps, and policy and regulatory information in order to reduce information barriers and project development costs. It also makes it easy, safe and efficient to share detailed and confidential information with potential investors.

Host Governments

Also the host governments benefit from the market place. By lowering the barriers of project initiation, development and financing it promotes economic and social development in the countries. The market place will also make it easier for new investors to enter the market. It will help governments to interact directly with the market players. For example, governments actively promoting renewable energy investments in their countries can use the market place to disseminate information on their enabling investment environments to investors and other market players in a timely manner. This can be done for example by arranging webinars on topical issues. Through the platform the hostgovernments can also promote renewable energy investment project opportunities in their countries.

Financiers

The marketplace will provide the financiers with an easy channel to identify and screen a wide variety of renewable energy projects. It will show the general data and summary of projects meeting the specific criteria of an investor, and make it easy to contact owners to get more detailed information about potentially interesting projects. It will also make it easier for financiers to find market, policy and regulatory information on IRENA's own databases. In the market place the financiers can also identify co-financiers to form consortia, project development funding to support interesting projects, and risk mitigation instruments to help structure projects and financing. The market place will lower the transaction costs of existing investors, and the market entry costs of new investors interested to invest in renewable energy projects in developing countries.

Service Providers & Technology Suppliers

The market place enables the service and technology providers to identify potential customers, develop their sales pipeline and create new business opportunities. The market place makes it easy and efficient to identify, screen and contact prospective project owners and to offer services and technologies for them. The market place also helps to identify sources for project development and investment financing for potential customers.
